How to Win during an Election Year

Guest Contributor: Branden Wong, VITAL Guide, offers strategies and insights on how businesses can thrive during an election year.

Have you experienced a lower volume of closed sales or smaller than “usual” proposal sizes this year?  Does the following response sound familiar? “Well, it’s an election year, so we just need to get through this period and things will get back to normal soon.”  This is a losing mentality and it needs to turn around quickly.  Election years, pandemics, interest rates, etc… can all be viewed as a reason for not winning, but they are simply excuses.  Let’s review some strategies to pursue during election years.

1. Double Down on Marketing and Sales

When others slow down, this is the time to ramp up your marketing efforts. Make sure your brand stays top-of-mind, positioning your services as essential investments that add long-term value to high-end properties. For example, if you are in the custom integration industry, highlight the lifestyle benefits of AV systems and smart home technology that elevate the home experience—luxury buyers still want to enjoy their homes, especially during times of uncertainty.

When was the last time you updated your website? Does it have client testimonials? Use content marketing, case studies, and client testimonials to showcase the value you bring. Focus on building relationships with stakeholders like luxury homebuilders to tap into their clientele, especially new buyers looking to upgrade.  When you ask a homebuilder to dinner, don’t take no for an answer- act like your business depends on the outcome of the dinner (because it does).

2. Identify New Revenue Streams

Have you talked to Partnerships, Networks, or formal Peer Groups about alternative types of revenue? Rather than pulling back, look for ways to diversify your services. If you’re heavily focused on residential, consider expanding into commercial opportunities or even targeting political campaigns and events during the election season. In the custom integration industry, offering related services like security systems, energy efficiency solutions, or maintenance contracts can provide steady revenue even if other parts of the business slow down.  We do not advocate a “throw a dart and see what fits” attitude, but rather a very mindful process based on research and data.

3. Stay Agile and Data-Driven

Finally, stay agile and make decisions based on real-time data. Track how your market and clients are responding to election-related uncertainty, but don’t assume that negative trends will hurt your business. Adapt your messaging, services, or pricing strategy based on what’s working, and remain focused on growth.  Find a service that specializes in helping businesses understand data.

Instead of letting election-year uncertainty be a reason for reduced expectations, use it as an opportunity to innovate and push ahead. By staying proactive, focusing on customer relationships, and keeping your team energized with a winning attitude, you can grow your business even when others are playing defense.
