I had a conversation with a client recently that sounded very familiar. He leaned back in his chair, rubbed his forehead, and said, “I’m buried. I’m working nonstop. Nights, weekends… I can’t keep up anymore.”
So I asked him to walk me through his week. Within ten minutes, the pattern was clear. His schedule was packed with quoting jobs that didn’t require his involvement, approving purchases that didn’t require his experience, answering questions his team was capable of handling, and reviewing items simply because he had always reviewed them. His calendar reflected a leader who had grown the business, but whose habits hadn’t evolved at the same pace.
As a business grows, leadership has to grow with it. The behaviors that help you build a company are not the same behaviors that help you scale it. When responsibility stays concentrated at the top, capacity stays limited. When decision-making spreads, the company strengthens and becomes more resilient.
If you’re exhausted, there’s a strong chance your next breakthrough isn’t about working harder. It’s about shifting ownership, building depth inside your team, and creating the kind of structure that allows the business to function without you in the middle of everything.
